Most people who keep up with the business world, and even many who do not, know that Amazon is currently in the process of choosing a location for their new HQ2. Locations across the United States, including Boston, Washington DC and Dallas, are being consider in addition to Colorado. Colorado, however, offers such an amazing, unique opportunity in that it meets the criteria set forth by Amazon...and more!
1. The standard of living is great across all ages
Colorado has been chosen as one of the very top best places to live and to age! Don't take just my word for it. The US News and World Report has placed Denver, Colorado as one of the top places to live for the past couple of years. https://realestate.usnews.com/real-estate/articles/here-are-the-20-best-places-to-live-in-the-us
Not only is it a great place to live if you are young, but in 2017 Colorado was chosen as the best place in the United States to age!
People keep living longer and with the baby boomers coming to an age when living with their children may end up being the best option financially for everyone involved. The parents may be able to spend more time with their grandchildren and, obviously, closer to family. As they may need help as they age, the children are there.
Home builders are even taking this into their new home designs by adding rooms with small kitchenettes and separate entries for parents to have their own space while still being a part of the household.
What does that mean for Amazon choosing Colorado? Colorado has a great young workforce with plenty of talent. That talent often comes with aging parents who may need their help. Colorado is an are for people of all ages!
2. There is SO much to do in Colorado!
From skiing to mountain biking and everything else in between, Colorado offers numerous activities year-round. I have gone skiing in mountains the morning and gone golfing in Denver the afternoon on the same day. With approximately 300 days of sunshine each year, people in the state tend to get outside quite often, The city is equipped to handle storms by clearing the streets, sidewalks and trails so even when it does snow, kids rarely get a snow day, Do not let your kids read that or they may refuse to move here!
What does that mean for Amazon choosing Colorado? A study by American College of Sports Medicine found that employees who worked out during their lunch break reported an average performance boost of 15 percent. http://www.businessinsider.com/why-its-time-we-paid-employees-to-exercise-at-work-2015-3
Another study published in the Journal of Occupational & Environmental Medicine showed that incorporating just 2.5 hours of exercise per week into the workday led to a noticeable reduction in absences.
A reduction in absences AND more productive workers? That adds up to savings for Amazon and greater productivity. With employees being more active, that leads me to my next reason.
3. Colorado is still the thinnest state in the nation!
The Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation reported that Colorado is not only the thinnest state in the United States but also has the lowest rate of adult diabetes, the lowest rate of physical inactivity and the second-lowest rate of hypertension. https://stateofobesity.org/states/co/
Colorado has held the thinnest state title for over a decade so it is not a one-time thing. Activity and healthier eating is a way of life in Colorado. With so many things to do and such great weather so much of the time year-round, people just get outside and move.
What does this mean for Amazon choosing Colorado? The costs of obesity and the benefits of a healthy lifestyle result in less time lost from work, more productive workers and possibly less health insurance costs as thinner, healthier people do not tend to get sick as often. “People who exercise 30 to 45 minutes a day experience a 40% to 50% reduction in the number of days they get sick,” says Dr. David C. Nieman, director of the Appalachian State University Human Performance Lab at the North Carolina Research Campus. http://time.com/4204235/how-to-not-get-sick/
4. Colorado Still Has Land!
Colorado has offered Amazon eight different options for where the corporation can place their new location. Some of the requirements from Amazon were the area needed to be within a certain distance of an international airport and be able to provide the company with the ability to expand to more than 8 million square feet by 2023. Colorado has not provided Amazon with merely one or two locations to choose from, but eight that meet the companies criteria. Although Colorado has had a large influx of people over the past few years, there is still land to expand.
What does this mean for Amazon choosing Colorado? Amazon has a choice of location here and is not limited to one or two areas as in some of the other cities. The facility they will be building will comprise of approximately 33 buildings and employ over 40,000 people on over 8 millions square feet. Not only does it mean there needs to be room for the buildings, but also for more homes in the area...and Colorado has that.
5. Colorado is pretty central in the United States!
Traveling when you live in Colorado is great! Not only does Colorado have more than one airline with their hub at Denver International Airport (DEN), but whichever way you fly, east or west, you can get there pretty quickly and easily.
What does this mean for Amazon choosing Colorado? The cost of transportation can be overwhelming for some companies. Lately the oil prices have been a tad lower than in previous years, so the general public has not noticed quite so much, but remember those fuel fees everyone was adding on when gas was over $4.00 a gallon? The cost savings of being near the center of the country can result in significant savings for Amazon which may mean savings for its consumers.
Although this blog has focused on why Amazon should come to Colorado, all of these points can also apply to people who wish to move here. The active healthy, lifestyle that appeals to all ages, the centralized location, the numerous activities, the availability of land as well as an international airport, all make Colorado an amazing place to live!
